The Hurlingham Club

Exclusive 42-acre private club by the Thames

Why it's in the guide

Private members' club of the properly old-school kind: 42 acres of grounds around a Georgian house beside the Thames, founded in 1869. This was the spiritual home of British polo — the sport's governing body is still the Hurlingham Polo Association — though the polo fields were lost to post-war housing and croquet has been the signature game since. Non-members get the view from the Thames Path, which costs nothing.

Membership famously takes decades, so enjoy the lawns from the Thames Path — the closest most of us get to croquet whites.
