Living in Fulham

An honest local’s guide for anyone moving here — or deciding whether to.

I live here, so this is the guide I wish someone had handed me before I signed anything. Fulham is inner London with the volume turned down: Zone 2, wrapped in a bend of the Thames, greener than almost any neighbouring postcode, and quietly confident rather than showy. It runs on families, dogs, riverside walks and a pub culture that never really left the 1990s — in a good way.

The honest pitch: you trade nightlife and edge for space, calm and the river. If your idea of a great evening is a proper local, dinner on Wandsworth Bridge Road and being in bed by midnight, Fulham will fit like an old coat. If you want to fall out of a club at 3am and walk home, you will be getting a night bus from somewhere else.

Fulham is among the calmer parts of inner London, though phone and bike theft around stations remain risks. Read the safety guide and published police data.

The verdict

Fulham suits

  • Young families who want a village pace without leaving inner London
  • Anyone working along the District line — Victoria, Westminster, the City
  • River and green-space people: two big parks, the Thames Path, Hurlingham
  • Pub loyalists — this is one of the best neighbourhoods in London for locals
  • Night owls — most of Fulham is winding down by 11pm
  • Anyone who wants gritty, mixed, high-energy London on their doorstep
  • Budget hunters — it is cheaper than Chelsea, but that is a low bar

The best places to live in Fulham

Fulham is a cluster of pockets, each with its own pace. Ranked, with who each one actually suits:

  1. 1

    Parsons Green

The classic choice — the green, the White Horse, and the strongest café and brunch strip. Families and sociable couples.

  2. 2

    Bishops Park

Riverside Fulham: palace gardens, the Thames Path, Craven Cottage. The prettiest streets and the calmest pace.

  3. 3

    Munster Village

Independents, a proper butcher, and barely a chain in sight. Quieter, residential, and often slightly better value.

  4. 4

    Sands End

The quietly-booming east: Wandsworth Bridge Road delis and restaurants, plus newer riverside builds near Imperial Wharf.

  5. 5

    Fulham Broadway

Maximum convenience — tube, shops, gyms, Stamford Bridge on your doorstep. Busier and less villagey.

Each linked area has its own guide to the places worth knowing once you’re there.

How safe is Fulham?

Fulham is one of the calmer corners of inner London. Most of what gets reported locally is low-grade — phone snatches near the tube stations, bike theft, cars broken into overnight. Violent crime is rare enough that it makes neighbourhood WhatsApp groups when it happens.

Usual London rules apply: keep your phone off the pavement edge outside Fulham Broadway, lock your bike properly, and do not leave anything visible in a parked car. Match days bring crowds rather than trouble.

What it costs

Hammersmith & Fulham has one of the lowest council tax rates in England — a genuine, recurring saving next to most of London.

Rents and prices are a clear step below Chelsea across the river bend, but this is still prime-adjacent west London. Sands End and the streets off Munster Road tend to offer the best value; anything overlooking the green or the river carries a premium.
